No news!
By the time you read this blog we will know the election results, and the media’s attention will have moved to other matters, whilst keeping a vigilant eye on our new leaders.
We are constantly bombarded from the media with information and conflicting views. This contrasts with the BBC news report on Good Friday 18 April 1930, when the regular news bulletin announced, “today there is no news” The wireless service then returned to its broadcast of Wagner’s opera Parsifal from the Queen's Hall in Langham Place. How about a repeat!
At times we need to be able to step back from the intrusive noise and information overload to which we are subjected, remembering when we are under pressure that:
-
God is in control
-
This world is not all there is - it will pass away; God is eternal
-
God is just and will make all things right - punishing the wicked and rewarding the faithful
-
God wants to use us to make a difference in the world.
Psalm 46 concludes with
“Be still and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”
The Lord Almighty is with us.
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Charles Kingsley, the Victorian novelist and vicar, commented on this instruction, saying:
‘If men are not still, they will not know that He is God - and if they do not know that the gracious Christ is God, they will not be still’.
Prayer - … for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever …
